The Dead and the Damned & [REC] 3: Genesis

Posted: 09/01/2012 in Movies

After the Zombie Movie Night vacation fiasco (See Exit Humanity), ZMN got back on track the following Friday. Which actually works out, since I always love a month where we watch extra zombie movies. First up was the wild west zombie movie:

The Dead and the Damned

THE GOOD and THE BAD: I’m just gonna go ahead and combine the two here, and let me make this clear here: TDATD is not a good movie. But everything that makes it a bad movie is endearing. There’ s terrible acting and dialogue. The movie looks as if it were shot in the crappy old western town portion of the crappiest local theme park. But all of that is pretty fun, too. TDATD also offers plenty of ridiculous, unnecessary, gratuitous nudity; a pretty funny twist ending; and one genuine creepy moment with a blind zombie.

THE ZOMBIES: The zombies are created by a mysterious glowing meteor crashed down to earth. The meteor is found and brought into town, only to unleash it’s evil zombie gas. The meteor itself is a pretty bad prop. The actors carry it as if it’s incredibly heavy, though it looks to actually weigh less than a piece of styrofoam. The zombies themselves do a fair amount of damage, biting naked women and what-not. Threat Level: 5

VERDICT: TDATD falls nicely into the “so bad it’s good” category. It gets a C+ and is definitely worth checking out as long as your not expecting anything good.

[REC] 3: Genesis

The original [REC] is a great movie. It currently sits at #5 in the ZMN Standings. [REC] 2, though well-received by most, I view as an abomination. It took everything that was great about the first one and spit on it. It turned the feral zombies of the original and changed them into scheming, talking demons. It also featured a stupid, magical secret door….in an urban apartment. I wasn’t quite sure what to think about seeing the 3rd installment.

THE GOOD: Luckily, [REC] 3 is awesome. It starts out in the handheld camera fashion of the first movies, but abandons that format in one of the film’s best moments. [REC] 3 takes a much less serious tone than the first two, and it pays off in spades. The comedic moments and zombie action both work really well.

THE BAD: Not much bad here. See this movie!

THE ZOMBIES: [REC] 3 maintains the religious aspect of the zombies, but does a much better job of it than [REC] 2 did. They’re still fast and feral, but they don’t pretend to be human or talk to anyone. Threat Level: 8

VERDICT: This is how you make an effective zombie movie. This one is nearly as good as the first. [REC] 3: Genesis gets an A.

Current ZMN Rank: #7 out of 85
